At AVEA, we take diabetes very seriously. The most important way to prevent blindness from diabetes (the most common preventable cause of blindness in the U.S.), is to have a routine, annual, eye exam. It's important not to wait until you have symptoms, because it is not always possible to return the vision back to normal once damage has occurred. Keeping your blood sugar and blood pressure under control reduces the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, and many other eye diseases.
Of course, diabetic patients can NOT smoke cigarettes! Since the major problem with diabetes is loss of circulation, and the purpose of your circulation is to carry oxygen to the rest of the body, ... poisoning your blood-stream with carbon monoxide (the gas that's in burning smoke) is perhaps the most damaging habit you could choose! (Yes, ... it is a choice...). It is slow, pre-meditated, suicide for a diabetic patient to choose to smoke cigarettes. Dr. Miller feels very strongly about this!
